With education undergoing a digital makeover in the wake of COVID-19, educators are increasingly seeking out EdTech solutions to improve teaching quality and effectiveness. At the recent STEM+E Summit x EdTech Demo Day, the teachers and principals of some 70 primary and secondary schools tuned in to explore the EdTech solutions of 23 start-ups.

The virtual demo day, jointly organised by Cyberport and the STEM+E Consortium, showcased 18 EdTech start-ups from Cyberport and 5 from Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. The start-ups presented an array of solutions designed for STEM education, game-based and immersive learning, e-learning solutions, school management, and more. It was a fantastic occasion for those who work in STEM education and who are responsible for purchasing EdTech products and services to liaise directly with EdTech start-ups, communicate their needs, and develop win-win collaborations.

During the event, a government representative also outlined the application details of the IT Innovation Lab in Secondary Schools programme. Proposed by the Financial Secretary in the 2019/20 Budget, the government initiative offers HK$1 million to every publicly funded secondary school to upgrade its IT facilities and organise activities to enrich students’ understanding of advanced information technology.

“EdTech is flourishing and is making deeper inroads into traditional education. As demonstrated by the solutions of the 120+ EdTech start-ups at Cyberport, not only can EdTech make learning fun and teaching effective, it can boost children’s proficiency in technology and prime them for the everything-digital world,” said Eric Chan, Cyberport’s Chief Public Mission Officer. “Cyberport will continue to enrich the ecosystem and connect start-ups with markets and investors to help them grow.”

Cyberport will be following up with event participants to match needs with relevant solutions and arrange follow-on meetings. Schools that are interested in the matching service can also register at http://www.hkedtech.hk/ .
